Training with Donavin Hawkey, cont....

Donavin Hawkey runs a beginner/intermediate MMA training session every Wednesday from the Body Guru gym in Umhlanga.

Classes focus on fitness (which I definitely need more of :) and MMA basics, although there are a few experienced guys in the class to balance things out (Justin Hawkey also trains with the group). The fitness is quite intense, and I recall being quite out of breath after a few cardio exercises Donavin put us through on my first visit. Afterwards we did some stand up/sprawl combinations, and then onto some jiu jitsu 101, passing the guard. Even after training with a few different groups you pick up some cool tips, and this was no exception.

I really enjoyed training with the guys in Umhlanga, and I can definitely recommend trying them out if you're in the area. If you're keen on getting fit or have aspirations of one day fighting get in contact with Donavin on 083 706 2172, or email him at hawkeyd@gmail.com

Fedor Still On Top

A lot was riding on this one for both fighters. What a fight!

The hard hitting Rogers broke Fedor's nose early in the first round with a jab, showing just how powerful he can be. However, the cut didn't seem to bother Fedor, and he persevered taking Rogers to the ground where he ended up on the bottom taking some heavy ground and pound. Rogers somehow managed to get out of a kimura and an armbar attempt, finishing the round covered in his opponent’s blood.

Rogers seemed a lot more confident and relaxed in the second round which was probably his undoing... dropping his hands and trying to come in with a half hearted left hook, Fedor knocked him out with a devastating right hand!

After the fight Rogers called out Fedor for a rematch (he must have forgotten what just happened)...

Personally I don't see the point, but until Fedor sorts things out with the UFC we might just see them go at it again?

Good fight nonetheless, and it goes to show that Fedor is definitely one of, if not the best pound for pound MMA fighter(s) in the world!

UFC 104 Controversy... Rua Robbed?

They always say if you leave it in the judge’s hands, you're going to be disappointed... and this time was no different!

It was definitely the hardest fight Machida has had in the UFC, and Rua looked as good as when he was fighting in Pride. Rua landed some of the most devastating body and leg kicks I have seen in a while, and definitely rattled Machida on a few occasions.

However, the judges had the final say and awarded Machida a unanimous 28-27 decision, I'm not sure they were watching the same fight... Bring on the rematch!!!
